Citizens Summits are to provide a combination of dissemination and data gathering
Resume Top
CARISMAND Citizen Summits are carefully planned events dealing with a number of specific topics related to different types of disasters and focus on specific aspects that affect culturally informed disaster risk perceptions.
Citizen Summits are structured in a way that encourages participants to take an active part in the discussions through interactive presentations as well as in small group discussions of up to 12 people.
The Second CARISMAND Citizen Summit took place in Malta on 16 July 2016.
After a brief introduction of the CARISMAND project, participants were asked questions about disaster simulation exercises, personal emergency plans, and the use of social media in disaster management. The audience provided their answers to these questions using individual key pads. This audience response system permitted researchers from the CARISMAND project instant access to the audience’s reactions.
The disaster exercise presented at the Summit was a simulation of an earthquake in Gozo organised in 2015 as part of the SIMIT project (Integrated System for Transboundary Italo-Maltese Civil Protection; project co-funded by the European Union).
The afternoon group discussions consisted of two main topics. The first topic addressed participants’ risk perceptions and intended behaviours in different disaster phases and different types of disasters. The second discussion topic aimed to identify cultural aspects which may affect disaster preparedness, relief and recovery, focusing not only on vulnerable groups but also on cultural factors which may strengthen the capabilities of individuals as well as communities.
